Cataract Awareness Month: Protecting Your Vision for Life

Cataract Awareness Month: Protecting Your Vision for Life

Cataracts affect millions of Americans, gradually clouding vision and impacting quality of life. As we observe Cataract Awareness Month, Ensight Skills Center is dedicated to educating our community about this common eye condition and promoting proactive steps toward prevention and treatment.

Understanding Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, resulting in blurry vision, faded colors, increased glare sensitivity, and difficulty with night vision. While aging is the most common cause, other risk factors include:

  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Excessive UV exposure
  • Previous eye injuries or inflammation
  • Family history

Prevention Strategies

While not all cataracts can be prevented, these practical steps can significantly reduce your risk:

Protect Your Eyes from UV Radiation

Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays when outdoors, and add a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.

Nutritional Support

Maintain a diet rich in antioxidants from colorful fruits and vegetables. Foods high in vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids support eye health.

Lifestyle Choices

Quit smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, and maintain healthy blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes.

Regular Eye Exams

Schedule comprehensive eye exams every 1-2 years, especially after age 60, to catch cataracts in their early stages.

When to Seek Help

Early detection is key to managing cataracts effectively. Contact your eye care professional if you notice:

  • Increasingly blurry, cloudy, or dim vision
  • Increasing difficulty with night vision
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Seeing “halos” around lights
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions
