I have always used the phrase “it is what it is” meaning “that is just the way things are so deal with it” or “just accept it”. Recently, I met with a good friend who said to me after I said, “it is what it is, but it is also what you make of it”. Wow! That turned it around on me. I like this.
Living with vision loss has never been easy, each day brings new challenges and reconciling to this way of life is one thing, accepting it may be another. But I always have the choice to make it into something different. I guess that reminds me of the old stand-by “making lemonade out of lemons.”
I can go through life feeling cheated or feeling sorry for myself that Macular Degeneration stole my vision, or I can look at all the wonderful things that have come my way because of a visual impairment. It’s true that being legally blind is not easy, but whose life is easy? I can tell you this: my life is never boring.
I am blessed and thank God every day for my husband, my family, my friends and the opportunity I have to work with other people who are living with the struggles of AMD, Glaucoma, Diabetic eye disease, Cataracts, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke or anything that may be causing vision loss.
It is what you make it after all.
